Dear Guests

Renting a recreational rental site unseen in the past resulted in hundreds of horror stories we have all heard.

Great Cottages..." Look Before You Book " eliminates a great deal of the risk of renting a cottage, cabin or chalet before you even set your eyes on the holiday rental you have chosen. Virtual 360 photographs and numerous digital pictures give you a first hand look into what you are renting.

We encourage you to ask a number of questions before deciding on which property you want to rent.

  • Clarify all terms and conditions in advance.
  • Ask what is included with the rental if the details in the description do not mention these items.
  • Does it include Bed Linens, blankets, pillows and towels?
  • Is there a Dishwasher, a Washer and Dryer for our use, a Bar B Q and is propane included?
  • Firewood? Is it supplied? Do I need to bring an axe?
  • Is there a TV, VCR, DVD and is there a rental store nearby?

Extra Guests- Most properties specify the number of guest allowed on their property. Please be respectful of their wishes, as most limits are set by the terms and conditions of their insurance policies. If you will have extra visitors, please clear it with the owners first.

If you plan on bringing pets, please clear it with the owners first.
Remember, other guest who follow you, may have severe allergic reactions to pets.

Parking-Clarify if you are allowed to park water craft or trailers on the property, or on the street. Many lake communities have specific regulations governing such matters.

Smoking-Check first to see if smoking is permitted on the property. Again insurance policies may prohibit smoking, or people with allergies to smoke may follow you the next week. Be considerate of others.

Responsibilities. Make sure you are clear on what the conditions are for cleaning the property when you leave. In most cases you must leave the rental property in the condition in which you found it, clean and tidy. Washing the floor and vacuuming are common in many rentals.

Liability. Be sure that you are clear on what your liabilities are for replacing broken or missing items when you leave. Some owners charge a Damage deposit and may charge you for the repair and replacement of damaged or broken items.

Shopping, Medical, Golf & other Recreation-Ask about grocery shopping, recommendations of where to shop, to dine, what to do, where to golf or where is the library, a local church or the nearest doctor, chiropractor or emergency medical facility open 24 hours?

Your hosts are there to provide you with a unique holiday experience away from your residence. We hope that these notes provide you all you need to know when you take your next holiday excursion.

We sincerely hope you enjoy your vacation!

Buying a Recreational Property

Every owner of a recreational property I have ever spoken with has a unique story about how they came to own a cottage, cabin, vacation home or chalet.

The stories often fascinating, usually have a common thread. As a child they had an enjoyable summer holiday experience and now later in life want to relive those wonderful childhood memories.

Of course not everyone is in that category, however those who purchase a recreational getaway for other reasons, have a lifestyle purpose in mind.

In the busy work world of today, and hectic pace that most of us seem to be involved in, a recreational property seems most attractive.

The process involved in finding just the right property in just the right spot for just the right price with all of the amenities that we want is a formidable task. The research process should involve making a list of all of the various aspects that are most important to you and your family and loved ones.

The location in real estate is everything. Do you want a property on a lake, by a lake, at a lake, in the mountains, on an acreage or in the back country? Distance from your principal residence is a Key consideration. Traffic to and from your recreational getaway is always a prime issue. There is nothing worse than having just endured a crazy week at work, and then to be faced with another 4-5 hour drive to your week end getaway.

Most people try to locate a recreational property within a 2-3 hour drive from where they live. This drive is manageable and if necessary can be broken up with a stop on the way to or from the desired location.

Once you have chosen several areas that might be suitable, research the areas to determine if the lake or community will offer you what you want and need. All families have differing requirements. Most of us want some of the conveniences that we have at home, local shopping, a good restaurant, medical services, and entertainment in one form or another. Others want total peace and tranquility.

Armed with your research, check out these areas and narrow it down to a couple of possibilities. Choice is important!

This next step, find a local realtor who can help you find just the right recreational property. These local knowledgeable people can save you time, frustration and money.

Most local realtors have a feel for their area and can in a short while present you with a couple of properties that best match your criteria.

Choices come in all sorts of packages and disguises. It is important that you stick to your plan and not be swayed by the many external factors that may not even match your ideal holiday getaway. Remember, you can always fix the interior and exterior, but you cannot move the lake.

The evaluation process to determine which property fits your wants and needs may take a bit of time. Compare all of the elements. Stay steadfast for the key points of the most importance, and give in for the ones that you are not that stuck on.

Remember, you have options, and can alter and change the property once you own it. You can make it your own, decorate it, redo the landscaping and personalize your dream getaway. Now the rest is up to you.
